Homework:
TTM or sheet 43
Read or work on genre packet

Last Friday Mrs. Sargent was in for guidance and she played a trivia game with the kids.  Many of them did not know what trivia was.  This morning someone said,"Who?" and I answered, "Who's on first" No one knew what that was in reference to.  So, we watched Abbott and Costello's routine of Who's on First.  Now they have that bit of that trivia.  Everyone should know who Abbott and Costello are. Then we talked about The Muppets and Mahna Mahna, and watched that.  That brought us to a conversation about how I brought my children to Manhattan to be exposed to different things like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Which brought me to sharing the book, From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. This book is about a brother and sister who live in the Met after running away from home. (They are from a good home, but Claudia is a bit of an extrememist) While there they sleep in a four poster bed. "What is a four poster bed?" they asked. On to google images of four poster beds! It was a great morning of learning about things that you don't normally learn about formally, but are good for the mind.  The more prior knowledge/global knowledge a child has the easier it is to learn.  Connections are made.  Below are the links if you would like to watch them with your child.  Have a great night. **** I am out tomorrow.  The students know exactly what is expected of them!!!!

Homework:
TTM for at least 20 minutes or sheet 40
Read or work on your genre packet for 20 minutes

Today the students learned about coding. They worked on Khan Academy and Code Academy.  On Code Academy, if you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see an exercise on animating your name.

All activities for after school have been cancelled.  This includes the concert for tonight.  I am not sure about tomorrow night's concert yet.

December 3, 2014

Homework:
Math sheet 37 or TTM-record lesson and some of the work on your journal.
Read or work on genre packet for at least 20 minutes.
Ask your child what the suffix ulous means.

We read The Lorax this week as an introduction to suffixes.  It also highlights many of the problems our Earth still faces, such as deforestration.  I would like to watch the movie with the kids before break.  We will compare the book and the movie. They will also write an essay on how the book supports the learning we have been doing this trimester.  The movie is PG so I have to receive your permission to show it to your child.  I will send home a permission slip, but you can email me if that is easier.
Here is a link to the movie description The Lorax Movie .  We will also watch the original 1/2 show from TV.

Homework:
I was unable to photocopy sheet homework and TTM logs.  However, the students still can complete TTM.
We are studying suffixes and one of the suffixes we found this week in "ulous". I have challenged the class to try to find the meaning of this suffix.  They can do this instead of math.
Read, of course!!!!!!!!
There is not much time until our next vacation so in math we are going to spend a few weeks on decimals.  In science we will start force and matter.

Homework:
Math sheet 30 or TTM
Read for 20 minutes

For girls' and boys' basketball I will need notes to allow your child to stay or go to BNML until practice.  One note can work for all season.
There is school next Monday and the students will be off from Tuesday to Friday.
If you can, please send in 2 cans of Cranberry Sauce to donate to our food shelf by Thursday. A note went home last week explaining this.

The students are busy creating their PSA for school composting.  They are using the ipads all around the school to create imovies.  We worked hard to be able to work in different areas of the school and be responsible. Those 6 weeks at the beginning of the year when I did a lot of talking and directing have paid off!  The students are managing their learning and doing wonderfully!

Homework:
Math -  TTM or sheet 28
Read for 20 minutes or work on your genre packet that goes with your book.  Working on the genre packet counts as reading.

For the past many years I have watch CNN Student News with my classes.  It is a 10 minute news program that focuses on international, national, and interesting news' items.  Carl Azuz is the host and he is very funny.  This year it has become a bit more serious with what is going on in the world with terrorism, so we don't watch it everyday.  I check the program's highlights ahead of time.  A common question of the day is, "Are we watching CNN today?" I am including the link in case you want to check it out when you have some time.

November 10th

So Bobbi Flack came back in today to continue her work on Public Service Announcements.  These videos will be longer than the typical PSA, but we are following the criteria for a PSA.  The following videos show her visits from last Thursday and today.  The last two videos show the students using the ipads to take practice shots of the hands and eyes.  They also will practice with over the should and full body shots.  A storyboard will be created that will fit the target audience.  Tomorrow we go to St. Albans for the Veterans' Day Celebration and I will post video from the parade and service.

November 10, 2014

Homework:
Math TTM or sheet 25
Social Studies reading and questions.
Prep for narrative writing post assessment.
Some kids still need to turn in permission slips for tomorrow's field trip to St. Albans.
Bobbi Flack came back today and I have some videos to share, but will do that later!  I have a meeting and need to go do some yoga and walk my dogs.
On Friday we had a visit from author Doug Wilhelm.  He wrote The Revealers and True Shoes, which the students will read next year in 7th grade.  He was an awesome guest.  In the morning he talked with the kids about writing and answered many questions and in the afternoon he wrote with them.
He are a couple of videos:

November 3, 2014

Homework:
Math - TTM or sheet 21
Read for 20 minutes.  Status of the class tomorrow!

Today in math we started dividing fractions by fractions.  The students still need to create a model first and then check their work by multiplying by the reciprocal.  Math assessments from last Thursday will go home tomorrow for a signature.  I will continue to work on these concepts during FLEX/intervention time.
We conferenced with our peers today on our narrative writing.  Here is video showing what conferences look like.

October 31, 2014

Today the buses dropped off the students at BNML and they "walked" to school.  Although we do have some students walk to school, the majority of them ride the bus or get driven to school by family.  I cannot believe next week in November.  We have worked hard as a class to get here and we are able to work independently and responsibly while adults are working with small groups.  The students are used to their chromebooks and the apps on the ipads and use them as a supplement to their learning. Have a great weekend!

October 29, 2014

Homework:
TTM or Sheet 19
If the math assessment was not signed it should be signed tonight.
Read for at least 20 minutes.

*Tomorrow, most students will take a graded assessment on a whole number divided by a fraction and a fraction divided by a whole number.  We will then move on to fractions divided by fractions.
There is a very good video from Khan Academy that shows the model of dividing fractions.
Video on dividing fractions
There are also many good images on google that show models. Dividing Fractions Models
Today, during small group review, kids played Math 24 using decimals and fractions.  In Math 24 you use 4 numbers that equal the number 24.  Example: 8, 8, 1/4, and 1/2. Those 4 numbers in a certain combination of multiplying, dividing, adding, or subtracting will equal 24.
24 Game  See if your child remembers how we solved the above problem.
How am I able to work with students who need different instruction or reteaching?  Well here is a video showing just that.  It took about 6 weeks to get here, but this video shows students doing many different things, all on task.  It allowed me to work with small groups. Notice how quiet it is!

I am out tomorrow so there will not be a blog post.

October 28, 2014

Homework:
TTM or sheet 18
All have a quiz on dividing fractions to show you and have signed.
Today, many students worked on reviewing these concepts and will have an opportunity to retake this quiz.
Science reading and questions.

The class is working on two projects that require independent research and note taking.  3 science projects were chosen from a menu of activities and for social studies we are researching in preparation for Public Service Announcements on composting and recycling.

We continue to work on writing powerful personal narratives.

October 27, 2014

TTM or sheet # 17.
For TTM it is important the students use the journal to document their work.  I will collect a journal page each morning.

We had a class/town meeting today to discuss what it looks like to be kind and/or mean.  The students spent a lot of time discussing whispering and how it looks to other people. Most of the class agreed that it is not necessary to whisper and usually sends a negative message.  I spent a lot of time talking about body language and how 80% of communication is through body language.  We will continue to talk about this throughout the year.  In the next few weeks I plan on showing "The Blind Side" which is a wonderful movie about kindness and acceptance.  It is PG so I will send home permission slips or ask permission in an email.

Sheet #16

Newsela article on Mount Rainier and "quiz" that goes with it. Due tomorrow.

Mr. Stebbins came in and talked to the students about this Friday's dance.  The biggest ideas to take from this talk are: the dance starts at 7:00 and ends at 9:00. (Not 6:50 or 9:10), school rules apply, dress code, and if a student receives a referral on the day of the dance, he or she will not be allowed to go.  The cost is $4.00, but $3.00 if you are dressed to the theme. This theme is "harvest".

Homework:
TTM or sheets 13 and 14.
I will go through TTM accounts with students tomorrow to be sure they are making progress.

Today we spent a lot of time working with our Chromebooks.  We practiced using the research tool and taking notes by using "jot dots".  We also learned how to find pictures that are "copyright free" to use in our projects.  Pixabay is a great site to use.  Once we had a picture we saved it to our google drive and then inserted it in a slide show.  The students will be doing this a lot this year.

This Friday is Hay Day.

Monday, October 20, 2014

October 20, 2014

The homework is different that what was on the board.  TTM and reading is all for tonight.  I will copy the science reading and paper math homework for tomorrow night.

We have a new student named Devyn.  He comes to us from Cambridge.

Today we worked on taking organized notes.  We will be using a template form called, "boxes, bullets, and bubbles."  Here is the link-Note Taking Template
The students are encouraged to take notes on the computer instead of hand writing them out because it is a skill they will need in the future.  However, if a student needs to hand write notes then he or she will still use this template.  It will be on the blog's home page.

September 26, 2014

I do not assign new homework on the weekends.  The students should read if they haven't read the 5 nights during the week.  Any class work or homework that is not finished by Friday afternoon is to be finished over the weekend.  It is important to start the new week with all assignments from the previous week completed.  If work is not finished then a detention will be assigned after school for Monday or Tuesday.  This is the same policy for 7th and 8th grade.
Have a great weekend.  Many students do need to finish science.  Email me if you are wondering, but all students put the work in their  take home folders if they needed to work on it.

Read for at least 15-20 minutes.  I will take a status of the class tomorrow to check reading progress.

Yesterday the students received their Chromebooks.  Tomorrow we will spend time getting on different sites we often use like Think Through Math, Khan Academy, Middlebury Language, and Gizmos.  The students will also be adding contacts to their gmail accounts and start sending home emails.

Today was a great day and there are many pictures and videos to see.  Please ask your child to share the field trip with you.  Groups of 3 had an ipad to document the trip.  These groups will use this information/coverage with additional information we will discover to produce a Public Service Announcement about composting and recycling.  They will then use these PSAs to teach the younger students.  A year from now they will use these PSAs to reteach the younger grades.  So, as 6th graders they will produce the PSAs and in 7th will use them the first week of school to teach. They will also be added to our Outdoor Classroom website.

I often use the following quote with the students, "There are 2 things in life you are in control of...your attitude and how hard you work."
Those 2 things make all the difference in the world.  And............when you have a poor attitude and don't want to work, but you work anyways~it builds character!  I heard that a lot growing up in my house.  My stepdad had to quit college at St. Lawrence University, when his dad died, and go to work. He was born in the Great Depression and knew nothing but hard, hard work.

9-12-2014

Although I don't normally assign homework on the weekends, the moon phase calendar will need to completed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.  There is also reading.  I hate to think of reading as homework!  I want the kids to enjoy the books they are reading.

This morning we spent time learning how our classroom library is organized so it can stay organized throughout the year.  My classroom libray has about 2000 books.  I am very proud of it.  We also worked on math.

This afternoon we spent time "playing" with Keva Planks.  Keva Planks
Here are some pictures and videos.  We will have them out next Thursday night at Open House.  It is from 6 to 7.  You will have the opportunity to sign up for October conferences.

Open House is September 18 from 6-7.  Families will learn more about our classroom, see the silhouette posters, and sign up for October conferences.
The first few weeks of school we build our foundation for the school year.  As we all know, if a house is built without a strong foundation it will become unstable.  That is how I feel about our classroom.  The last 2 weeks the students have learned how our class operates. This allows for differentiated instruction and classwork.  I often have many different things happening in the classroom at one time.  Students need to learn how to manage themselves so everyone can be on task and getting what they need when they need it.  Our chromebooks will be here soon and that will allow us some more independence.  Math homework will be on the computer once I get the students on Think Through Math.  They will also be using Khan Academy for reteaching and enrichment.
Today my order for Keva Planks arrived.  Check out their link to see these amazing blocks!

Homework:
Science~Phases of the moon calendar.  Reading with questions.
Read DEAR book for 15 to 20 minutes.
Read PBiS Letter with parents.  There are 2 links, one to the Tully website to see the class expectations and another to the survey form.

Next week is Open House.  It is on September 18th from 6 to 7.

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

September 9, 2014

Homework:
Read for 15-20 minutes 5 nights a week.  Status of the class is taken every Monday and progress is to be evident!
Math-100 chart to identify prime, deficient and abundant numbers.

We started talking about factors and multiples today to prepare us for dividing fractions by fractions.  It is important to know that with dividing fractions the students will have to draw it out and will not be allowed to simply keep it, switch it, flip it..........as we were taught.  They can eventually do this, but we first focus on what is means to divide fractions and also what is means when you multiply them.

Thank you for taking the time to read the letter and answer the survey on PBiS.  PBiS has done a world of good for our school.  If you didn't get the chance, here is the letter PBiS Letter. There are links to visit and a survey to complete at the end.

Next week we will start our Picture of the Day.  Students will go around our school and grounds and take pictures of every day sights, but from a different perspective.  This helps us to understand that we need to treat people the same way.  Things are not always how they look.  Here is an example.

Here is a copy of the reading journal for our books on Kindness, Acceptance, and Tolerance. Reading Journal

Reminders:  September 18th is Open House from 6-7.

Friday, September 5, 2014

9-5-14

No homework on the weekends unless your child reads.  I take a status of the class for reading every Monday so I can check weekly progress on how they are doing.

As you know, the students get brand new computers this year that will follow them through 8th grade.  This year we are switching to Chromebooks.  Hopefully they will be in by next week.  However, we also have ipads.  Today the students worked on them to learn how to get on to apple tv, create folders, and work with others while using the ipads.  Each group shared 3 apps they liked working with.  One group shared a photo app.

This afternoon we went up on the hill to do some activities.  The students played on their "old" playground.  The video shows they are not ready to give up this awesome playground.
Next week our days will follow the middle school schedule with math, science, language arts, and social studies.  We have spent the last week and a half getting to know class expectations and building community. On Monday I will send an email asking you to check out our class blog and site with your child.  The site will have class documents and class expectations.  You will then use a link to a google form (survey) to answer some questions about the blog and site.

Have a great weekend!

9-4-14

Homework:
Read 15-20 minutes 5 nights a week.
Self-selected reading forms shared with parents and slip with signature returned.

What Happened Today?
We learned a new game called Math 24.  A video below shows how you do it.
We went out to the high tunnel and did some watering and weeding.  When in the high tunnel students need to be on task and attentive to the task at hand.  The high tunnel is an outdoor classroom and the same expectations apply as in the regular classroom.  We will do lots of activities this year that require students to do exactly as we ask, just as we will do lots of activities where the students have choice.
As I was hanging up Silouette Poster the students were having Relish time.  Relish is when you are done with your Mustard and Ketchup work...... must do and catch up. Students need to stay on task during relish because I am working with other students.  These pictures show what a great job the students were doing.
We are also having a healthy snack delivered to our door 4 days a week now!

Reminders:  Open House is September 18 from 6-7.

What Happened Today?
Today we set up our schedule for collecting recycling around the school.  Our year is focused on Natural Resources.  We start the year with composting and recycling, then focus on the sugar bush and maple tree, and end the year with alternative energy and water.  In the next couple of weeks we will be taking a field trip to Hudaks and the Northwest Solid Waste District.  Everyone has a self-selected reading book and has learned how to keep track of this reading.
Here is a picture of recess today.

Open House is September 18th from 6-7.

August 13, 2014

Yesterday I finished my tech course and want to share some things I learned. The most exciting thing was how to use a green screen. I can't wait for kids to start using this for projects! Gaming and coding came up a lot and I will admit this is an area I am not comfortable with but hope to learn more this year. I learned how to do a screen cast on the computer and incorporated that into my final project. Kahoolt is a neat game I learned and can't  wait to use it with the students. Overall it was a wonderful course. This was level two and am hoping they will provide a level three next summer for coding and gaming.

Yet again, a Garageband  song....final one.

Last night I played around with GarageBand and posted one of the songs.  This morning I created another one and I have to present it to my class so I am practicing now.
