Homework:
Math-sheet 96, Week 11, or TTM
Read for at least 30 minutes.
We read articles from Scholastic Scope today and practiced our "close" reading. Close reading is careful reading and rereading of a text to understand the features and language used. It is very useful, but very different than what we did when we were in school. We are asking students to use higher level thinking earlier in their school careers so we need to give them lots of practice to use higher thinking when reading. My school years pretty much asked me to read and find the answers in the text. Now we are asking students to read many texts, analyze the information, and then synthesize the information to form a conclusion. Summarizing vs Synthesizing Here is a video showing the students reading.

Math-Sheet 94, Week 11 or TTM
Read for at least 30 minutes. We talked today about how reading is so important to being a strong learner. The more developed your vocabulary the easier time you will have learning new things. If your child hates to read, and we have a few in our room who do not like it, then expose him or her to different kinds of reading. Newspapers, magazines, non-fiction, or biographies. Go to Barnes and Noble and browse through the different kinds of books. I am always willing to help a child find a book he or she will enjoy. Below are some pictures and videos from Project Sweet Talk. We didn't work on our article today due to SBAC practice testing, but will work on it tomorrow. SBAC testing starts next Wednesday. Here is the schedule: SBAC Testing
