Winter Break

Hi Everyone,
I hope the kids have a great vacation.  When we get back we will start our sugaring unit, Project Sweet Talk.  Our school celebration for this unit will be on April 19th in the morning.  More information will be sent home after break.  The 4th grade will go on a field trip to the Branon Sugarhouse and Howrigan Sugarhouse on March 23rd.  The 5th grade will go to Melissa Dion's sugarwoods with our county forester, Nancy Patch, but a date has not yet been determined.  On March 13th, both classes are going to the Flynn to see, "The American Revolution." A permission slip will be sent home today or the Wednesday we get back.  If you are traveling, I wish you safe journeys. If you are staying local, I wish for more snow!  I am traveling to Clifton Park, NY to spend the week with my mom and stepdad.

John Lewis and Ruby Bridges

No homework tonight except to read!!
The 4th grade learned about Ruby Bridges by reading a play in Scholastic Storyworks magazine.  Ask your child to tell you about her.  They know how to log on to Storyworks to show you the play if you want to see it.  The link and password are right on the blog!
The 5th grade has been learning about John Lewis and The Freedom Riders.  We have been using the book, Freedom Riders and Chords Of Courage to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement.
Tomorrow ends our spirit week with Fairfield Day.  Today was dress like a teacher day.  I had a few mini mes!

End of Trimester this Friday

Homework:
Read for 25-30 minutes
NO more Grammar Minutes for this week
NO spelling this week
Math-division 2
Math-Fraction 2
The end of the trimester is this Friday.  All work must be completed by then.
5th Grade brought home yesterday and 4th grade brought home today,  the Technology Acceptable Use Policy to review with their parents.  Once it has been reviewed, then the student and parent should sign and date the form.  Please return to me.  A packet went home reviewing our PBiS system and the history behind it. We are also going to start documenting "reminders" about computer misuse. Believe me, we don't want to start documenting one more thing, but we are having a lot of computer issues due to misuse.  Please review all forms with your child.  If possible, I would like the signed policy back by Thursday.  All other forms stay home. Thank you very much for all of your support.

Spelling

Spelling Reminder:
On Monday, students get a spelling packet for the week.  In the morning, during homeroom time, they are to complete a page and ask for help if needed.  Each night, they are to study their words. They can study by taking a test or doing a look, cover, write, check on the back page of their packet. If they do another activity, say with scrabble tiles or an oral test, parents can sign the back of a page with the date and activity.  I just need proof students studied.
Homework Reminder:
Our homework shouldn't take the students more than 10 minutes per grade level.  So 40 for 4th grade and 50 for 5th grade.  I always ask the students to read at the end of the homework assignments, if they have time, or read right before bed. Homework is an activity that teaches the students time management and study skills. Our homework is the same every night, unless the students need to finish an assignment or we are working on an extended time project.
