Homework:
Math-sheet 96, Week 11, or TTM
Read for at least 30 minutes.
We read articles from Scholastic Scope today and practiced our "close" reading.  Close reading is careful reading and rereading of a text to understand the features and language used.  It is very useful, but very different than what we did when we were in school.  We are asking students to use higher level thinking earlier in their school careers so we need to give them lots of practice to use higher thinking when reading.  My school years pretty much asked me to read and find the answers in the text. Now we are asking students to read many texts, analyze the information, and then synthesize the information to form a conclusion.
Summarizing vs Synthesizing                    Here is a video showing the students reading.

Go to Barnes and Noble and browse through the different kinds of books.  I am always willing to help a child find a book he or she will enjoy.
Below are some pictures and videos from Project Sweet Talk.  We didn't work on our article today due to SBAC practice testing, but will work on it tomorrow.  SBAC testing starts next Wednesday.  Here is the schedule: SBAC Testing

Before vacation we were having some issues regarding honesty, responsibility, and respectfulness. Today we discussed a quote having to do with integrity.

  • No matter how educated, talented, rich, or cool you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all.  Integrity is everything.

We looked up the meaning of integrity which led us to look at the definitions for ethics and morals. We will continue this discussion tomorrow.  We also discussed how integrity does not mean we act perfect.  We are all going to make mistakes, but it is how learn from mistakes that matter the most. Mistakes are the best learning opportunities.

The kids have fun with the Keva Planks.  This afternoon we had our Winter Carnival which was turned in to an inside "free" afternoon with activity rooms to visit.  Hopefully we can have the Winter Carnival in March when the temperature warms up a bit. My room was the Keva Plank room and they also got to play on the smartboard.  The kids come back on Wednesday, March 4th.

Progress Report and work review- Progress reports were sent home on Tuesday.  These need to be signed and returned with all stapled work.

I was out yesterday to go to Clifton Park for my stepdad's surgery. He was admitted for an overnight observation so I stayed with my mom and drove up to school this morning.  The students surprised me with cards and a cake for my birthday (which was yesterday).  Thank you so much Mrs. Dunn for organizing this and Mrs. Fournier for making the beautiful and delicious cake.  It was exactly what I needed after the stressful day we had yesterday. My mom and I were in the hospital all day.

I did not get to the blog after school today so I sent home an email.  I have copied and pasted the email for today's blog.

I did not have a chance to get to the blog tonight.  Math and reading is the same as always.  The students are working on a book project and we reviewed the rubric today.  The project is due next Friday, February 6th.  Here is the rubric for your review.  Book Project and Book Talk Rubric and Organization Guide  I handed out the Project Sweet Talk Handout  and permission slip to go on the interview. Rubrics will be handed out for all project products and permission slips will go home for signature when Mrs. Jerose schedules the interviews. She is in the process and we should find out more tomorrow.  We are not sure of the date for our Project Sweet Talk celebration share, but will let you know as soon as we do.  We will have an assessment on multiplying and dividing decimals this Friday and start ratios next week.  Progress reports will go out next week.
