Evacuation

No homework tonight due to the evacuation.  All of the students' belongings are locked in our room.  Today during 4th grade ELA and 5th grade Math, Dr. O'Dell announced that we needed to evacuate the building.  The 4th and 5th grades did a fabulous job clearing the classrooms and building.  We had practiced this drill this past fall, everyone knew what to do, and we were able to go to our evacuation sites safely.

*********The 4th grade was having a fabulous ELA class! Everyone was on task and focused on their assignments.

This post is for the 5th grade students.  Last Friday, our Restorative Circle was on trust and what makes a person trustworthy.  This survey is a follow up to that Circle.

5th grade,
Please open this survey and complete it.  You do not have to share your name unless you want to, so please be completely honest.

Cold...............

Finish math and read.

I heard it was cold on the slopes today!  It was cold outside at recess and very icy.  Today we worked on catch up work, Scootpad (online math and reading site, aligned to the common core), quiet reading, Sudoku, and cooperation through playing board games! I wanted to teach all of them to play solitaire using real cards, but we ran out of time.

In ELA, we are finishing some mid-year assessments.  Fountas and Pinnell, a reading assessment, is just about finished. In this assessment, teachers work 1:1 with a student. The student reads and we check accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. I explained testlets yesterday, and we will be finished with the first one this week. We will study non-fiction reading and writing in ELA.  This will mainly be during Project Sweet Talk, our sugaring unit. The 4th grade learns about the process of sugaring and the 5th grade learns about the sugarbush and maple tree. 4th grade will also be learning about the American Revolution and the 5th grade will learn about the Pilgrims through a simulation of the  Mayflower Journey and setting up a Colony.  These units will take us through the end of the 2nd trimester.

Multi-Age Day!

Grammar Minute 57, Read, Finish Math!

While Mr. Sweet was with the Jay Peak kids, I had the 4th and 5th graders together.  We had a great day.  Most kids were able to finish their PLPs.  5th graders helped Mrs. Howrigan with her students' PLPs.  In the afternoon we played Math 24.  I'll have to take a picture of it and show you how it works in another blog.  It was fun having a mixture of the grades together.

Personal Learning Plans........E-Portfolios

Homework:
Math is due on Friday.
Grammar Minute 56 and READ!!!!

BRAGGING.........................the 4th and 5th-grade students are doing extremely well on their e-portfolios.  If you want to see what your child has done, you can have them go to their email and get to their e-portfolios. Your child would need to know his or her password to sign in on a Google home page.  They will also be sharing them with you during spring conferences, which are completely student led.

I am so proud of how they are persevering through technology issues, explaining their learning, and helping other students.  These past three days have been wonderful!!

Tomorrow is a Jay Peak day.  Mr. Sweet is chaperoning the 4th and 5th graders and I will have all of the non-skier/snowboarders with me. Mrs. Howrigan and I hope to get the school's cross country skis out and organized so we can start taking the kids skiing and snowshoeing on Jay Peak days.

Yesterday's Post

Last night I sent out a post showing pictures from last week's recesses and found out today I posted them to the Outdoor Classroom blog!  The kids have been working super hard on their Personal Learning Plans.  I am not being easy on them and the expectations are high for their explanations to be detailed.  I am very proud of 4th and 5th grade.
I'm not sure about Math homework, but for ELA the students have a grammar minute and reading.
I'm staying here late tonight for the basketball game and the PTO meeting.

Welcome Back and Happy New Year! Transferable Skills

Homework:
Grammar Minute 52 and READ!!

This week we will be continuing to work on our Personal Learning Plans - PLPs, also known as
e-portfolios.  We started working on them at the end of the first trimester, but are digging a little deeper looking for more evidence and explanations of how we have met the transferrable skill we are assessing.  Below is a link to a document that shows the 4 Transferrable Skills the 4th and 5th graders work on and the criteria for each skill.

Once the PLPs are complete, the students can share them with you.  Actually, you can see them right now by having your child log on to their school gmail, google account. Here is the link: Transferable Skills.

Example:
Transferable Skill: Clear and Effective Communication- I write a blog for parents and my principal to update them on what is happening in the classroom.  The blog allows me to share pictures, videos, and links to my parents so they are aware of the happenings in our room. When new families move in, they can look back through the blog to get an idea of the classroom their children will be in. Evidence: Link to Blog

This is what we want the students to do.  It makes them look at their learning through their eyes so they can learn how to personalize it to fit their needs.  When you look at the criteria for Clear and Effective Communication, you can see that I hit upon all the criteria with my blog.  We don't expect 4th and 5th graders to hit all criteria with one piece of evidence but do expect them to become familiar with the evidence over the years so they can look at their learning through the lens of the Transferable Skills.
